This map, dating from the late '30s, showing the location of the nuclei of Romanian origin in the ethnic-Macedonian-Albanian Epirus. The largest of the "spots" oblique stripes - east of Ioannina - roughly corresponds to the territory of the Principality of Pindus future. Note - a little further north, in Albania - a small region of Korça (or Koritza), from 1916 to 1918 established the so-called "Republic of Korca."
The Pindus is a vast mountainous region located in between the Lower Albania Epirus, on the one hand, and the Aegean Macedonia and Thessaly, northern part, is inhabited mainly by ethnic group of Romanian origin, the Aromanian or cuzo-Vlachs, which have similar appearances, however, even more sporadic in other regions Balkan (remember Vlach istrorumeni Dalmatian and Kvarner).
In 1941 the Italians - who occupied Greece - thought to ride the autonomy Aromanian creating a territorial entity with a certain degree of autonomy. Was thus formed the Principality of Pindus, where he was appointed king of the noble Wallachian Alkiviadis Samarina Diamandis, known for being - in 1918 - one of the promoters of the so-called Republic of Koritza (region of Lower Albania Albanian-populated by Orthodox, Greek and Aromanian), and - more recently - the fascist leader of the Roman Legion.
not believe, however, that the creation of the Principality only utilitarian answer to a demand from the Italian side. The diplomacy of Rome - or at least a part of it - "seeing" a state-Epirus Corfu between Albania and Greece, and most probably "saw" a pure state Wallachian between Epirus and Aegean Macedonia, a state that perhaps could be spread to the north (up to Koritza) Basa also separates Albania from the Aegean-Macedonian region. The Principality of Pindus
had a regular political and administrative life, and maintain relations - as well as Italy - with Romania, the motherland of Aromanian, and Bulgaria. At its eastern border was - as already mentioned - Macedonia: namely, it was the Aegean Macedonia (Greek or Graecised now), also object of the aims of the annexation of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian-Macedonian VMRO, and, more specifically, of the Aegean part of Macedonia that was inhabited by the same people who populated the Aromanian Pindus. In 1942 an unknown party Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (it was certainly representative of the industry component of the Vlach-Macedonian) offered the crown of a piece of Macedonia, the valley of Moglen, Alkiviadis the prince, who accepted it. Since that time the state took the name of Wallachian Principality of Pindus and Moglen or - more grandly - of the Principality of Pindus and Voivodship (or Duchy) of Macedonia. (1)
Shortly after this event (we are roughly at the end of 1942), Alcibiades, I surrendered the throne to his right-arm Nikolas Matoussi (Nicholas I), which kept him until the fall of Fascism in Italy.
The Principality survived, however, at the end of the Italian system. He was appointed a new king (the noble Magyar Gyula Cseszneky de-Wallachian Milvànyi), who reigned for a few days, until 8 September. Then he abdicated in favor of his brother Mikhail, but did not accept.
finally came last gasps of the Second World War and the beginning of the Greek civil war. The Pindus followed the fortunes of Epirus, and was then finally re-annexed to Greece (probably in 1947). Its residents have to pay a price for the support given to the Italian cause. (2)
